The most economical inground pool option is a vinyl liner pool. Concrete or gunite pool type is the most expensive option. Composite pools (fiberglass) are in between but leaning toward the concrete.

As you know, in-ground pools come in three types: vinyl-liner, fiberglass, and concrete or gunite. Basically, each pool type will serve the purpose! Some of the questions you need to ask yourself are budget, pool size, pool shape, and pool features.

In basic terms, a vinyl liner pool is an above-ground pool designed to be installed in the ground. If you have children and/or pets, you most likely don't want to install a vinyl line pool due to the easily damaged liners. Vinyl liner pool can be shaped and sized almost as you want, yet with increased size and custom shape, the price for the pool will jump to the level of fiberglass pool or even concrete pool. Also, the vinyl liner pool will require more maintenance and repairs in the long run. And last but not least vinyl liner pool is not an insulated pool to keep the water temperature steady.

Fiberglass pools are prefabricated one-piece pools that come in many shapes and sizes, yet the pool's maximum size cannot exceed 16 feet due to the freight restrictions. Fiberglass pools don't require as much maintenance as vinyl liner or concrete due to non-porous surfaces. One of the benefits of getting a fiberglass pool is quick construction time.

Concrete or Gunite pools are the commonly known pools among consumers. Concrete is the most expensive option, and construction time is extensive. One of the benefits is there is no limit to the shape and size.

Vinyl liner pool construction time is about 2-3 weeks without a pool deck. With the pool deck altogether, expect at least 1+ months of total construction time.

Fiberglass pool installation time is 1-2 days without a pool deck. With the pool deck altogether, expect about 7-10 days of total construction time.

Concrete pool construction can vary depending on the size and shape and usually takes 2-4 months.

Vinyl liner pools are the most challenging pools to maintain and clean due to the nature of the material.

Fiberglass pools are the most accessible to clean due to the special gel coating designed to deter mold and algae. In addition, due to the non-porous surface, there is no need to brush a fiberglass pool as often as a plaster-finished concrete pool.

Concrete pools are harder to clean since the plastered surface absorbs algae into its pores. Therefore it will require more extensive brushing and chemicals.

Vinyl liner pools will require more chemicals and overall more maintenance due to the nature of the material. As a result pool pump will require longer hours to operate.

Fiberglass swimming pools require fewer chemicals because 'fiberglass' doesn't affect the water much. Also, a pool pump will not be run as often, so you will see additional savings on your utility bill.

Pools finished with plaster (concrete pools) significantly affect the pH level of the water. As a result, you need to use more chemicals to correct the problem.

Fiberglass pools are flexible and can withstand a lot of abuse. Fiberglass pools are also temperature resistant to the freeze-thaw cycle that occurs during the year. In addition, fiberglass has a shock-absorbing ability that allows it to flex up to 2 feet. There are also new concrete construction techniques that allow concrete to flex, but the cost for such concrete models is high.

Vinyl liner pools will require constant liner replacement due to wear and tear every 4-5 years. Often, the liner needs to be replaced due to some rodent problems or damages made by children or pets. Each occurrence will cost $3,000-$5,000 as an average.

Fiberglass pools will not require future re-plastering or liner replacement as concrete and vinyl pools will. However, the fiberglass pool might have spider cracks due to ground movements or improper Gelcoat application issues. Most of the problems are covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Concrete pools will require re-plastering every 7-10 tears. Each re-plastering will cost $7,000 to $15,000 or even more, depending on the area. Surface warranty is a variable that will depend on the contractor.
